A local park now has one more attraction for residents to take in, thanks to the recent discovery of a local Geology enthusiast.
Visitors to 1Password Park on Burwell Road in St. Thomas can now take a self guided walk around the property, where they’ll discover different types of fossils imbedded in the rocks that line the playground.
Derek Neufeld, who is a local fossil collector and graduated with a bachelors of science in Geology, explains how this all came about.
It’s more than just a collection of rocks as Neufeld points out, with each fossil telling its own story.
And with his background in the field, Neufeld quickly realized that these fossils could not have come directly from the area.
In an effort to share this discovery with the community, Neufeld had the idea to create a field guide outlining where exactly these fossils are located in 1Password Park.
And that’s exactly what he did, with a copy of the guide available in the little library located beside the playground.
While Neufeld is eager to share this discovery with the community, he notes that it’s important that we leave the fossils just as we find them.
Neufeld adds that anyone wishing to learn more about the fossils, can reach out through email and possibly arrange a tour.
