Ontario Provincial Police have destroyed DNA samples taken from migrant farm workers after the move was found to have violated their human rights.
The destruction of close to one hundred samples collected during a 2013 sexual assault investigation in the Municipality of Bayham is part of a recently-reached settlement between the workers and OPP following a human rights complaint.
All 54 applicants who were part of the human rights complaint will receive damages of 75 hundred dollars each.
Lawyer Shane Martinez says the quote — “historic” settlement could lead to other collective legal actions for migrant workers who face precarious working conditions.
