The government is putting $156 million over three years toward a new three digit suicide prevention hotline.
Mental Health Minister Carolyn Bennett says that on November 30th, people in crisis will be able to dial 9-8-8 anywhere in Canada and be connected with trained responders.
The new hotline is set to operate 24 hours a day and will receive communications by phone or text message.
Bennett says the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health will receive the money to launch and operate the hotline, while also getting $21 million to bolster the capacity of their distress centre services.
