St. Thomas Police wasted little time in taking action against a new city business dealing with magic mushrooms.
On Thursday, a 39-year-old London resident, an employee at the Talbot Street location of Fun Guyz was charged and over 7,100 grams of psilocybin with a value of $71,500 seized.
In a statement from police they advised, “Fun Guyz is part of a chain of stores present in multiple Ontario municipalities, specializing in the sale of psilocybin products to the general public. However, psilocybin remains a classified substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.”
Police in London and Windsor have already raided outlets in their cities and the stores remain in business.
St. Thomas Police corporate communications coordinator Samantha Wakefield explains no charges were laid in regard to operation of the business.
The employee was charged with possession of a schedule substance for the purpose of trafficking.
St. Thomas is the latest in a chain of illegal brick-and-mortar magic mushroom dispensaries springing up across the province.
Earl Taylor, chair of the Downtown Development Board tells myFM it’s a wait-and-see situation at this time.
The police statement noted, “The St. Thomas Police Service remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. The diligent efforts of our officers have resulted in the successful intervention of illegal psilocybin distribution.”
Friday morning, a company representative advised the store will be closed for a day or two while they re-stock the shelves.
