Our communities are becoming more diverse, with people of all backgrounds adding their experiences and perspectives.
To celebrate this diversity, the St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership is celebrating Welcoming Week, Friday through Sept 17.
It’s a global initiative that celebrates the people, places and values that make our communities welcoming, notes manager Petrusia Hontar.
This is the first time a week-long event has been planned she tells myFM.
Hontar says the many activities planned through Sept. 17 go a long way in making St. Thomas and Elgin county a welcoming, caring and inclusive place to live.
As part of Welcoming Week, the St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership is helping celebrate Mennonite Heritage Week with a couple of events in Aylmer.
Hontar outlines the events planned for next Thursday and Friday in Aylmer.
The Mennonite Sing-Along runs 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday Sept. 14 in Palmer Park, 27 Centre Street in Aylmer.
The Soup Cook-off is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, 5 Queen St. North in Aylmer and is hosted by Mennonite Community Services.
You can compete in cooking the best sommaborsch or simply enjoy sampling all the soups for lunch.
In addition there is a Unity Barbecue from 2-4 p.m. this Saturday Sept. 10 in Pinafore Park.
