It was a big day for local talent at the Professional Women’s Hockey League draft in Toronto yesterday.
Two St. Thomas natives were selected among the first 90 women in the leagues inaugural draft, as teams from Minnesota, Toronto, Boston, New York, Ottawa and Montreal picked up their first 15 players.
Veteran Brittany Howard was taken in the 8th round and will remain with the Toronto franchise where she played last year. And newcomer Lexie Adzija was selected by Ottawa in the 11th round.
Howard will be among some big names in Toronto with Jocelyne Larocque, Kristen Campbell, Emma Maltais and Olympic Gold Medalist Natalie Spooner going in the first four rounds.
Adzija will join Savannah Harmon, Ashton Bell, Jincy Dunne-Rose, and Gabrielle Hughes in Canada’s Capitol when the 24-game regular season begins in January 2024.
Minnesota was given the first selection in the draft, taking Former University of Minnesota star Taylor Heise.
