As people digest the recent decision by Metroland Media Group to stop printing most of its community newspapers, questions are being raised about its impact on journalism as a whole.
President of the Canadian Association of Journalists Brent Jolly says he worries this will leave more people turning to unverified information.
Jolly says those wanting to pursue journalism as a career have fewer options now than ever before.
He adds that the announcement was truly a dark day for media.
Jolly says the Canadian Association of Journalists will approach all levels of government to support local news.
In total, more than 600 people were laid off.
