Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners
It’s the new year, a time when many of us make resolutions to become better versions of ourselves; happier, healthier and some even look to give back to their community!
With the need for volunteers continuing to grow, the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners is welcoming those who wish to make a difference in the lives of those living with dementia.
We sat down with Megan Fife, Manager of Volunteer Engagement with Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners who notes that their vital programs aren’t possible without support.
The Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners services those across Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford counties, with a large need for volunteers locally says Fife.
Because with upwards of 150 new referrals every month, Fife says many residents living with dementia are getting left behind.
Fife says they have roughly 16 active volunteers spanning across St. Thomas-Elgin, with an additional 25 necessary to meet the local need. One of those volunteers is St. Thomas resident Scott Shakir, who explains how he first got involved with the organization.
It was a way to step out of his comfort zone noted Shakir, who had never worked with clients up until that point. He says the Alzheimer Society makes it so easy for volunteers, from the onboarding process to getting out into the community.
As someone who gets so much back from the time he spends with clients, Shakir had this to say to encourage some more support from the local the community.
And as far as criteria volunteers must meet, Fife says there really is only one!
