Nine municipalities in southwestern Ontario – including Elgin county – will get a total of two million dollars from the province to prevent abandoned oil and gas wells from exploding.
The province says the funding will also be used to educate residents about the dangers posed by abandoned wells, many of which date to the late 1800s.
There are roughly 27 thousand abandoned oil and gas wells in Ontario.
The province plans to provide 7.5 million dollars to municipalities over the next three years as part of its nearly 24 million dollar action plan
