When it came time to appoint a new artistic director after the death of long-time director Simon Joynes in February, the Port Stanley Festival Theatre board of directors did not have to look far.
Last week, it was announced associate artistic director Liz Gilroy would assume the role, as per Joynes’ wish.
“Liz brings with her a wealth of theatre experience in a wide range of roles and responsibilities,” advises Wendy Cowie PSFT board chair.
It’s a dream come true, advises Gilroy.
Gilroy began her artistic journey as a professional performer at the age of 12.
That was the start of a robust career that included seasons at The Stratford Shakespeare Festival, three summers as Diana Barry at The Charlottetown Festival, and Canadian premieres starring in Elf and Legally Blonde at Neptune Theatre.
Gilroy says her life has been devoted to the theatre.
Last season at PSFT, Gilroy worked alongside artistic director Simon Joynes. A partnership that was meant to continue into the 2024 season.
While the 2024 season will proceed as planned, Gilroy has some ambitious plans to augment the productions.
That includes tying in with a popular Port Stanley event in December.
And, an extension of the season to embrace the spirit of Christmas.
We asked Gilroy about another popular event at PSFT.
Looking to the future, Gilroy is toying with Canadian musical productions.
The vision for now, enthuses Gilroy is “bigger and better.”
She adds assuming the artistic director role would not have been possible without Joynes’ belief in her and his mentorship.
Gilroy closes with, “I look forward to creating inspired and diverse theatre that sparks conversation and joy in our intimate setting.”
