Ottawa has announced that the upcoming federal budget will include funding for a national school food program, aiming to provide meals to 400-thousand more kids per year across the country.
The Liberal government has long promised to launch such a program, campaigning on the issue in 2021.
It’s put a price tag of one-billion-dollars over the next five years on the national food program.
Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre says the Liberals newly announced plans to spend one-billion-dollars to work with provinces on the creation of a national school lunch program is a “federal food bureaucracy.”
The federal Tory leader says the fact that children are going hungry while at school is a reflection of the prime minister’s last eight years in government, calling it a failure for Justin Trudeau.
The federal budget is set to be released April 16th.
