Ontario says it is now exploring options to allow for principals to assign teachers with no technological credentials to teach such courses next year.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced last year that high school students would have to take a course on technology and the skilled trades in order to graduate as of September 2024.
It’s a move teachers and principals suggest indicates the province is ill-prepared for the new mandatory nature of those classes.
While non-tech teachers would have to agree to be assigned to those classes, the president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation says some might do it just to get out of supply teaching even if they don’t feel comfortable with the move.
Ontario Principals Council president Ralph Nigro says while he supports the introduction of the courses, more steps should have been taken to ensure their success.
