Making an impact on Earth Day, or any day can seem daunting- but seemingly small actions can make a big difference.
Call2Recycle, Canada’s top battery collection and recycling group, is urging Canadians to mark Earth Week by recycling used batteries.
Recycling batteries is vital for Canada’s net-zero transition, minimizing hazardous waste and safeguarding the environment. Disposing of batteries in landfills can harm the environment due to their chemical and metal components. Proper recycling allows for reuse of these materials, reducing the demand for new resources and promoting a circular economy.
And did you know that your household likely has close to a hundred batteries in it right now?
That was Call2Recyle’s VP of Marketing and Communications Jon McQuaid who says recycling batteries can not only be used to make new pots and pans and so many other things, but keeping them out of landfills keeps toxic materials from adversely effecting our environment.
Call2Recycle is a not-for-profit organization that has over 10,000 household battery drop-off locations across Canada. You’ll find them at pharmacies, hardware stores and even recycling centres.
In the last 27 years, Call2Recycle has helped divert over 45 million kilograms of batteries collected and recycled.
McQuade spoke about how important recycling your batteries is for the environment.
According to McQuaid, starting the habit of recycling early is something they’ve been working on with organizations like Earth Rangers. Together, they visit schools and encourage children to collect batteries to prevent them from going to a landfill.
So have a look around your house today with your kids, collect those depleted batteries and drop them off for recycling.
Those in the city can utilize drop offs at Staples, The Source, Canadian Tire, RONA, ListenUp! Canada or at the St. Thomas Community Recycling Centre.
