With Earth Week upon us, Oneida Nation of the Thames is taking part in a week-long celebration of environmental stewardship and community involvement.
With assistance from the Imagine Build Team, over 100 volunteers will be participating in a stewardship project which aims to enhance the natural beauty of the Oneida community.
The Environment Team at Oneida has played a key role in organizing the Earth Week activities, with support from volunteers within the Oneida Administration, Oneida students, 60 students from the London Catholic School Board, Oneida staff members, and donations from local businesses.
Chief Todd Cornelius expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement, stating, “We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Imagine Build Team and all volunteers who are joining us in these efforts. As Haudenosaunee people, we have long been stewards of the earth, and this initiative fulfills our promise to take care of the land for future generations.”
The highlight of the beautification project includes specially designed gardens by Oneida and TLC Landscaping, which will honor the Bear, Turtle, and Wolf Clans at Oneida.
These gardens, located around the Oneida buildings, serve as a symbol of the community’s commitment to preserving Indigenous culture and the natural environment.
The gardens will also be used as a teaching tool for the Environment team to Oneida students and a place for all Oneida members to connect with the land.
