Ontario is considering changing its tallying of how many homes are built in municipalities across the province after some complained that undercounting cost them millions in provincial funding.
Premier Doug Ford’s government has assigned annual housing targets to 50 municipalities to build 1.5-million homes over the next seven years, and promised additional funding to those who meet their goal.
But Ontario’s Big City Mayors say their internal counts don’t match the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s data, and four municipalities lost out on 23.3-million-dollars in funding.
The Municipal Affairs and Housing office says the government is discussing with CMHC how to improve data.
