Residents of apartments at Ross and Wellington streets got an early start to the day Sunday when they were awakened by smoke alarms.
Firefighters responded around 5 a.m. and quickly knocked down a fire in the second-storey wall.
Everyone was safely evacuated with no injuries. One resident has been displaced and street level businesses suffered water damage.
The cause is believed to be electrical in nature.
Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun noted it is a case once again where working smoke alarms gave everyone the time they needed to get out safely.
She stressed, “Smoke alarms save lives, test yours today.”
