With Canada’s birthday coming up Monday, many residents will be looking to celebrate the day by taking in a local fireworks display.
While it may be something your family looks forward to every year- pets may not feel the same way.
The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is reminding the public that fireworks can be frightening to animals and to take extra precautions to prevent lost pets over the long weekend.
Unexpected loud noises and flashing lights can make our companions feel anxious, and some animals will even run away in fear and become lost.
Kiersten Bell, spokesperson with the OSPCA, shared with myFM about some of the ways you can keep your pet calm and safe.
The OSPCA recommends making sure your pet is wearing a properly fitted collar and ID tag or have them micro chipped.
Create a safe place for them to hide during the fireworks. Close the curtains, place a blanket over their crate, or turn on the TV/some quiet music to drown out the noise.
Even if your dog seems to be okay with fireworks, it’s best to leave them at home.
Bell shared with us what to do if you do become separated with your pet.
You should also contact your local animal centre and animal control to see if anyone has found your furry friend.
