In response to escalating concerns over inappropriate and hateful comments, the St. Thomas Police Service has announced significant changes to its social media policies.
Effective immediately, the service will be limiting and disabling comments on select social media platforms- including Facebook.
While social media has become a vital tool for the STPS to engage with the community and get their messaging out there, accounts can not be monitored 24/7.
And despite best efforts to moderate and review comment sections, the STPS has observed a troubling increase in comments targeting victims of crime, accused individuals, fellow social media users, and STPS members.
This trend has contributed to a negative and toxic online environment that the STPS is unwilling to endorse.
Our local police service stresses that they will continue to offer meaningful and robust ways for the community to connect with them, including through the STPS website general email platform, during face-to-face community engagement events, surveys, and other dedicated interactions throughout the year.
