Cities and towns across Ontario say there were at least 14-hundred homeless encampments in their communities last year.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario is asking the province for guidance and to let people receiving welfare or disability payments collect shelter benefits as well.
A spokesperson for Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Paul Calandra says the province is spending 700-million-dollars a year on community and supportive housing, and is giving Toronto and Ottawa more than 240-million-dollars for shelter and homelessness supports.
A City of St. Thomas delegation will be in attendance next week in Ottawa for the association’s annual conference.
