St. Thomas is seeing positive changes in its crime rates, according to the latest 2023 Crime Severity Index (CSI) released by Statistics Canada.
In data shared by the St. Thomas Police Service, the city’s overall CSI dropped by 13.57%, with a significant 20.09% reduction in non-violent crime. This decline underscores the city’s ongoing efforts to combat crime effectively.
However, the Violent Crime Severity Index saw a slight rise of 7.66%, which highlights the importance of addressing violent crime in our community.
Chief Marc Roskamp states “The implementation of the Critical Incident Response Team continued investments in both Street Crime and Property Crime Units, enhanced investigative focus on Human Trafficking and Intimate Partner Violence, continued investment in frontline resourcing, and the expansion of crime analysis capabilities, a second K9 unit, and innovative deployment strategies for all uniformed assets – will be our main operational focus moving forward aiming to decrease violent crime in our city.”
The St. Thomas Police Service stressed that they remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and will continue to adapt and innovate its strategies to effectively reduce crime severity in the community.
