An incredible three days at 21 Kains Street in St. Thomas came to a close Thursday afternoon, as builders, volunteers and countless community partners, gathered to celebrate the work undertaken on Project Tiny Hope.
With Doug Tarry Homes steering the ship, Wastell Homes, Collier Homes, Winmar Construction, MP Custom Homes, Mark Thomas, DHP Homes, Woodfield Design and Build and a number of trades partners, completed 8 tiny homes during a 3-day blitz build.
The community spirit was evident stressed Doug Tarry, who took the time to thank everyone for their support.
Like many communities across Canada, St. Thomas-Elgin is experiencing a housing crisis with a lack of affordable rental units. While this is just the first step in the completion of this project locally, Tarry already has plans to share it further.
The YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin will be expanding its housing services, for a total of 40 new rental units at 21 Kains Street. While the site is now completely transformed, Lindsay Rice, Executive Director at YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin recounts the early days of the project.
The new rental units will be inclusive to diverse populations from all walks of life, with a mix of one, two and three bedrooms to accommodate adults, youth and families. Each tiny home will be equipped with a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry, private bedrooms and living room, providing dignity and comfort to those they support adds Rice.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston was on hand for the celebration, who thanked all the partners for their continued collaboration.
While the blitz build may be over, work is not done on Project Tiny Hope.
