Ten students, including one locally, have been named as the latest recipients of Fanshawe College’s Schulich Builders Scholarships for Skilled Trades.
The program, launched by The Schulich Foundation in 2023, aims to address Canada’s labour shortages in skilled trades through an annual $3 million investment.
This year in total, 120 students across 12 Ontario colleges were selected from over 1,000 nominees.
One of them is 19-year-old Nathanael Pollock, a graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in St. Thomas. Pollock, who is currently enrolled in the Welding Techniques program this fall, was the recipient of a $20,000 Schulich Builders Scholarship.
Fanshawe received $325,000 from the foundation to provide six $20,000 scholarships for one-year certificate students and four $40,000 scholarships for two-year diploma students.
While the scholarships can help cover tuition, tools, and living expenses, recipients, known as “Schulich Builders,” also receive leadership training and mentorship to enhance their student experience and assist with their entry into the skilled trades upon graduation.
Stephen Patterson, dean of Fanshawe’s Faculty of Science, Trades and Technology, expressed gratitude for the support, while Judy Schulich of The Schulich Foundation emphasized the importance of skilled trades in building prosperous communities.
