You may have noticed an increased police presence on local roads and highways this past weekend.
That’s because Ontario Provincial Police across the West Region have teamed up with municipal police services, including Aylmer and St. Thomas, to host the annual Festive RIDE campaign.
It officially kicked off November 21st, aiming to reduce impaired driving during the holiday season stressed Chief Superintendent Dwight Thib, Commander of OPP West Region.
So far this year, OPP have conducted 10,170 RIDE events, a 20% increase compared to last year.
And while the number of alcohol and drug-related crashes resulting in fatalities has decreased in 2024, the figure should be at zero shared Thib.
Adding that many of these crashes have lifelong impacts outside of death.
The OPP reminds drivers that no amount of alcohol or drugs is safe when driving. They encourage everyone to avoid driving after consuming alcohol or drugs and ensure others do the same.
Sergeant Ed Sanchuk, Coordinator of Media Services with West Region OPP left those at the launch of the Festive RIDE campaign with this important reminder.
