Acting on a tip from Health Canada, the OPP Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team late last month swooped in on an illegal grow operation on Talbot Line in the Wallacetown area.
Health Canada had advised the OPP that the location was associated with three expired registrations to produce or designate someone to produce cannabis for medical purposes.
A total of 6,060 cannabis plants were seized along with 529 recently harvested outdoor plants, as well as 345 kilograms of dried, processed cannabis.
The Cannabis Regulations set out a legal framework that provides reasonable access to cannabis for medical purposes for patients and health care practitioners who rely upon it. However, the potential misuse of the access to cannabis for medical purposes program may lead to the diversion of medical cannabis into the illicit market.
Health Canada has the authority to inspect sites that are registered for personal and designated production for medical purposes. When serious non-compliance is identified, enforcement action may include seizures, destruction of plants or referral to law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the illegal sale or production of cannabis should contact the OPP non-emergency number at 1-888-310-1122.
Alternatively, you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
