Southwold Township launched its 175th anniversary celebrations in rousing fashion on Saturday with a party at the Keystone Complex in Shedden.
About 200 people attended the afternoon festivities that featured live performances from Connor Wilson and Wrif Wraf with Randy Dawdy.
Mayor Grant Jones stressed this is only the beginning.
Southwold was named in 1792 after Southwold in Suffolk, England.
It was formally incorporated in 1850 as part of Middlesex County and then became one of the inaugural townships in the County of Elgin in 1852.
It is one of the few unrestructured municipalities in Ontario, remaining unchanged in terms of its original name and boundaries.
Southwold is sometimes referred to as the “keystone township” due to its shape.
Jones talked about some of the fun facts related to Southwold’s history.
He tells myFM a major event is planned for late summer at the Keystone Complex, the showcase venue in Southwold.
The next event in the year-long celebration is Southwold Winterfest on February 15th.
