The YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin brought the community together Saturday for their annual Women’s Day Fundraiser, featuring hands-on workshops, inspiring talks and a special celebration of the King Charles III Coronation Medal recipients.
Participants of this much-loved event spent the morning spread out amongst the St. Thomas Seniors Centre, taking part in themed activities, before coming together to share a meal.
St. Thomas native and former Olympic figure skater Sherry Ball served as guest speaker during the lunch hour, delivering an empowering presentation about her personal journey in the sport- which included leaving her family at an early age to pursue her dream.
Topics such as body image, injuries and the grueling training schedules that young athletes deal with were spotlighted, adding a powerful touch to the day’s events.
The gathering also featured a special ceremony honoring Marla Champion and Carrie O’Brien, who were awarded a King Charles III Coronation Medal for their outstanding contributions to the community through their work with the YWCA.
Helen Button, YWCA Board Chair, explained the significance of the honour.
Marla Champion has spent her life advocating for her community, dedicating 28 years as executive director of the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, where she lead efforts in affordable housing, education, and support for women and girls. Now retired, Marla remains deeply involved, serving on the Project Tiny Hope Capital Campaign Committee, continuing her mission to create positive change in St. Thomas.
Carrie O’Brien is a land development planner with Drewlo Holdings, Inc., where she navigates every stage of the development process, collaborating with government and industry leaders. A passionate advocate for women’s issues, housing, and the environment, she joined the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin Board in 2016, serving in various roles, including Board Chair.
The YWCA thank all who attended the Women’s Day fundraiser as they continue to advocate and support women and children across St. Thomas and Elgin County.
