As we prepare for Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, the St. Thomas Fire Department encourages residents to take the time to check the batteries in smoke alarms and CO detectors.
Although many clocks including cell phones, tablets, and computers will most likely make the flip automatically, analog clocks, watches, vehicles, ovens, and microwaves may need to be manually changed.
And so the time change serves as a natural reminder, notes Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun.
Destun reminds that all smoke detectors that have been damaged, painted over, or are over 10 years old should be replaced.
She adds residents should also check to see whether alarms may need to be cleaned or dusted, depending on where they are located.
Destun reminds residents to also check in on elderly relatives to make sure their alarms are being kept up with.
