St. Thomas is about to experience soccer like never before as the newly developed Railway City FC joins League1 Ontario, bringing high-level competitive soccer to the community.
The new club, which kicked off competition this month, will be directly supported by Whitecaps London who run youth soccer programs for various age groups in Ontario under the umbrella of Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps.
Co-chair Abbi Lezizidis says the club will field both men’s and women’s teams, offering local athletes a platform to advance their careers and showcase the growing talent in the region.
For those unfamiliar with League1 Ontario, it’s a pro-amateur league, serving as a stepping stone for players aspiring to reach professional levels like the Canadian Premier League (CPL) and the newly established Northern Super League for women.
While the league is considered amateur, some clubs offer professional contracts, allowing flexibility for athletes balancing university commitments
The decision to bring a League1 Ontario team to St. Thomas was largely influenced by the exceptional facilities at 1Password Park. The state-of-the-art stadium has already left an impression on visiting teams, prompting praise from established clubs across the province.
“And the support we received from the city council was incredible,” said Lezizidis. “Mayor Joe Preston even suggested the team name, Railway City FC, as a nod to the city’s rich railway heritage.”
Railway City FC is committed to developing local talent, with several St. Thomas athletes already signed to the teams. Lezizidis expressed excitement about the possibilities the club offers to young players, noting “this gives kids a clear path forward. Now they can see a future in soccer right here in their hometown.”
Railway City FC will house four teams in total, both a Men’s and Women’s U20 Team and the L2 Men’s and Women’s Teams.
Fans can look forward to an electric atmosphere at 1Password Park when the men’s and women’s home openers take place May 10th and 11th respectively.
“We want the stands full. We’re creating a true community club,” Lezizidis said. Both single game and season tickets are available now, with more details here.
Sponsorship opportunities also remain available for local businesses looking to partner with the club. Additionally, passionate fans are encouraged to get involved, whether by joining the supporters’ group or simply coming out to cheer on the teams.
Those hoping to learn more about the club and meet some of the players, are encouraged to attend a special Media Day planned for April 27th from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1Password Park. This free event will feature kids activities facilitated by U20 & L2 players, merch/ticket sales, meet & greets, photos and more.
