The province has taken control of the Thames Valley District School Board over financial mismanagement, Education Minister Paul Calandra said Wednesday.
A provincial review revealed the board spent $40,000 on a staff retreat at the luxury Skydome hotel in Toronto, despite running “significant” deficits for years, leading to student service cuts.
The projected deficit is almost $17 million for this year.
Calandra said the review found “a lack of financial oversight in the budgeting process” and criticized the board for prioritizing “a retreat … amid a multi-billion dollar budget deficit.”
The province has also launched probes into three other boards and ordered a fifth to repay travel costs.
