An early morning fire in a triplex on Locust Street has displaced multiple families and sent one person to hospital.
According to the St. Thomas Fire Department, the blaze broke out early Thursday, prompting a rescue as neighbours and bystanders helped one family escape by assisting them off a roof where they had sought refuge.
One individual was transported to St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, while others were checked by paramedics on scene as a precaution. Tragically, one family lost their dog in the fire that has left all tenants from the three units displaced.
Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the flames, limiting most of the damage to a single unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
Victim Services Elgin has been called in to support the displaced tenants. Medavie EMS Elgin and St. Thomas Police Service also responded, assisting with road closures and on-scene support.
