The St. Thomas Swish Special Olympics basketball team is closing out another standout season filled with competition, community connection and the possibility of a trip to Nationals.
Coach Trevor Armstrong says this season was one for the books, as the team not only dominated on the court at tournaments and Provincials, but also capped off the year by hosting three friendly games against members of the St. Thomas Police Service, Aylmer Police, and the OPP.
Adding, that the team lights up when they learn officers are joining them on the court.
Competitively, the Swish took on tougher teams from the GTA this season, cruised through Provincials with a gold medal, and are now waiting on official word about qualifying for the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which will take place in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
“The athletes were incredible this year. They’ve really stepped it up,” Armstrong said. “The coaches’ endorsements are in, so now we just wait to see who gets the call.”
While some of his athletes have gone on to higher levels of competition in other sports, this would mark Armstrong’s first trip to Nationals as a coach.
Armstrong closed by thanking the many families, sponsors and supporters who make seasons like this one possible.
“Without their help—especially with things like transportation—some of these tournaments just wouldn’t happen. We’re so grateful.”
