At a ceremony outside the County of Elgin administration building Monday morning, staff lowered the Canadian flag to pay tribute to those impacted by workplace tragedies.
The event was in commemoration of National Day of Mourning, honouring workers who have died, been injured or become ill due to workplace incident or exposure.
According to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada, more than 1,000 workplace fatalities were recorded across Canada in 2023.
During the ceremony, Warden Grant Jones stressed, “Our people are our greatest strength. Your safety — the safety of every employee, at every site, in every role — matters deeply to council and to me personally.”
He added, “We are committed to making sure that the workplaces we’re responsible for are safe, supportive, and respectful environments. Everyone deserves to feel confident that they can do their job and go home safely at the end of the day.”
