A vibrant community hub for local youth is celebrating two decades of service with a family-friendly open house this Saturday, May 10th.
Ignite Youth Centre is marking its 20th anniversary with a public celebration featuring games, activities, a free BBQ with popcorn and ice cream, all designed to give the community a taste of what the space offers year-round to youth aged 12 to 19.
The Talbot Street facility, originally known as the Talbot Teen Centre, has evolved considerably over the years—but its mission has remained the same: providing a safe, welcoming space where young people can relax, connect, and access support explains Manager, Julie Forrester.
Forrester actually grew up coming to the centre as a teen, and now she’s back as the Manager. Sharing, “it’s incredible to see how the space has grown while still holding onto the heart of what makes it special.”
They now also share the space with the STEAM Education Centre, which adds another creative dimension to the programs available to youth-everything from 3D printing and laser cutting to wood burning projects.
The Ignite Youth Centre offers a mix of drop-in fun—like gym time, video games, cooking nights, and movie Fridays—as well as deeper supports around mental wellness, housing insecurity, and life skills- Monday through Friday from 2:45 to 8 p.m.
“We meet youth where they’re at,” Forrester said. “Sometimes they come in to hang out, and then those moments turn into deeper conversations.”
Those hoping to learn more can stop by the open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It’s open to anyone curious about the centre—including families with younger children or teens thinking about joining in the future.
Bikers Against Child Abuse will also be rolling in for the event and will have their motorcycles on display for guests.
As Ignite celebrates this milestone, it’s also launching a new fundraising campaign on Saturday called Spark Change, aimed at refreshing the facility’s furnishings, flooring, and equipment—some of which date back to the early days.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built,” Forrester said. “But to keep supporting youth for another 20 years, we need the community’s help.”
