After nearly three decades of shaping library services in St. Thomas and beyond, Heather Robinson, CEO and Chief Librarian of the St. Thomas Public Library, has announced her retirement, effective December 31, 2025.
Robinson’s career in public libraries began with humble roots, shelving books at the London Public Library.
While studying Library Sciences at Western University, she completed co-op placements at the City of York Public Library—where she later began her professional career as a Children’s Librarian.
She went on to serve in the same role at Kingston Public Library before joining St. Thomas Public Library in 1998.
Starting as a Children’s Librarian, Robinson brought her passion for literacy and innovation to nearly every department over the years, including Children’s & Teens and Public Services. She played a key leadership role in the library’s major 2010–2011 renovation project, which included a temporary relocation to Elgin Mall and a complete overhaul of the downtown branch.
Appointed CEO in 2016, Robinson has guided the library with a clear vision—one rooted in the belief that libraries are inclusive, inspiring spaces where all people can learn, explore, and grow. Under her leadership, the St. Thomas Public Library has transformed into a vibrant community hub.
Highlights of her tenure include the creation of the Kids Spot, the installation of outdoor murals, and community-driven art projects that enhance the visitor experience.
In 2004, Robinson’s contributions were recognized provincially when she received the Ontario Public Library Association’s Children’s Librarian of the Year award.
“The Library Board has enjoyed and appreciated working with Heather, a strong leader who embodies the library’s vision and its mission, We Connect. Heather encourages and supports library staff to continuously seek opportunities to expand the library’s role in serving and connecting with our community through new, innovative and creative ways,” says Deb Laverty, St. Thomas Public Library Board Chair.
The board is now working closely with Robinson on a transition plan, with further details about the search for a new CEO to be announced in the coming months.
