A long-awaited elementary school in Belmont is one step closer to reality, with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) announcing an additional $2.3 million in funding from Ontario’s Ministry of Education.
The funding brings the total investment for the project to $24.2 million. The board also announced Thursday (May 22) that the construction tender for the project has been awarded to Graceview Enterprises Inc. of Belmont.
The school, to be built along the south side of Seventh Avenue west of Snyders Avenue, will accommodate up to 507 students and is expected to open by September 2026.
“This new school will mean a lot for our students, and for the community of Belmont,” said Bill Tucker, Interim Director of Education for TVDSB. “I’m very pleased construction will soon be underway.”
Planning for a new school in Belmont has been ongoing for five years now, with officials praising the collaborative effort between the school board and the Municipality of Central Elgin for pushing forward.
“This marks an exciting milestone in Belmont,” said Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan. “We are proud to support this project and look forward to seeing construction begin on a school that will serve local families and meet the needs of our growing community.”
Initial provincial funding for the project was announced in July 2020.
In January of 2025, TVDSB did announce that it was seeking public input on the naming of the new elementary school. However no word on the selection process has been shared at this time.
