St. Thomas Police are investigating a significant fraud case after two local residents were scammed out of approximately $15,000.
On the evening of May 29, two St. Thomas residents were contacted by a man claiming to be a Scotiabank employee. The caller reportedly convinced them that their bank cards needed to be collected for security reasons and that a courier would retrieve them.
Later that evening, a male suspect arrived and picked up the cards, which were subsequently used to make fraudulent purchases totaling around $15,000.
The incident remains under investigation. Police are urging anyone with information—or anyone who may have experienced a similar scam—to contact the St. Thomas Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
Residents are reminded to never hand over personal banking information or cards to unsolicited callers and to verify suspicious requests by contacting their bank directly.
