Following a successful Victoria Day weekend screening, the locally produced documentary Netting the Waters is returning to the Periscope Playhouse in Port Burwell for a series of encore presentations this June.
The film, which explores the commercial fishing industry along Lake Erie’s Shore, will be shown Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 14 at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m.
Directed and produced by filmmaker Daryl Granger, Netting the Waters offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the lives of Lake Erie fishermen, focusing on the catch of smelt, pickerel, and perch.
myFM had the chance to speak with Granger about the film, which combines drone, underwater, handheld, and mounted camera footage to capture both the beauty and brutality of life on the lake.
What sets the film apart is not just its subject matter, but the dedication behind it. Granger was a one-man crew, handling everything from cinematography and scripting to editing and narration.
The documentary has become a regional phenomenon, selling out screenings across Ontario and gaining traction at film festivals- including being named a nominee in the Cannes Arts Fest.
Audiences at the Saturday evening screening on June 14 will also have the chance to meet Granger in person and take part in a question-and-answer session, offering insights into the production and the real-life stories behind the film.
Granger adds that the film is for anyone interested in Lake Erie’s fishing history and what life is like on the water – you don’t need to be a seasoned angler.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through the Periscope Playhouse’s website.
