It’s been 30 years since John Davidson from London pushed his son Jesse across the province in a wheelchair to raise money for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
It’s a disease that would eventually take Jesse’s life when he was only 29.
After the Ontario walk, John tackled the whole country, inspiring a nationwide movement and leading to the launch Canada’s only charity dedicated solely to ending Duchenne.
And today, he’s doing something special to mark the anniversary.
Davidson shared why he decided to embark on this journey once again.
Defeat Duchenne Canada has now raised close to $19 Million for research and has a goal of getting the country approved for medication already available in the U.S and the U.K.
myFM was on hand for the kick-off to the 30-kilometre walk this morning, where Davidson once again stressed the need for support.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston took part in the 30th anniversary celebration, along with local first responders. The St. Thomas Police Service Pipes & Drums Band played as the crowd began their walk west down Old Talbot, with Davidson leading the way.
The first stop on the way to Victoria Park will be Thomas Brothers Farm Market at 5856 Colonel Talbot Rd, expected to arrive around 11:30 a.m.
Community members are encouraged to show their support along the way and contribute at these designated “Donation Stations” throughout the route.
