When it comes to rivalries in the sports world, you can’t beat a good Canada versus U.S. matchup. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Florida against Edmonton for the Stanley Cup, or men’s and women’s international hockey and soccer, the only way to describe the atmosphere is intense.
There is plenty on the line Saturday as Canada attempts to snatch away a Guinness World Record from the pesky Americans who now hold it.
And there is nothing cheesy about this battle for domination.
Well, actually there is because it does involve cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheels, to be exact.
You see, Whole Foods, the current American champion, holds the world record for most Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheels cut at a single time.
Not as simple an accomplishment as you may think, because the wheels weigh about 80 pounds each.
Real Canadian Superstore manager Mack Connell explains what is on the line this Saturday at noon.
We asked him to detail the history of this passionate competition and Connell had both elbows up as he answered.
To give an indication of the intensity factor at play here, several hundred stores are teaming up in a power-play blitz to re-capture the cheese title.
And this year, it is a winner-take-all competition, stresses Connell.
Now here’s food for thought. The public is invited to come out to the Real Canadian Superstore to watch this run for the record while partaking in some Parmigiano Reggiano.
It all starts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Real Canadian Superstore, where you are invited to enjoy a record-breaking day.
