Southwestern Public Health has issued a drug watch for Elgin County, Oxford County, and the City of St. Thomas following reports of carfentanil circulating in the region.
Carfentanil is an extremely potent opioid—estimated to be 100 times more toxic than fentanyl. It cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, making it difficult to detect in street drugs.
Even a small amount can lead to overdose or death.
Health officials urge anyone using substances to avoid using alone, carry naloxone, and start with small amounts. If someone is overdosing, call 911 immediately, administer naloxone, and stay with the person until help arrives. Multiple doses may be needed due to carfentanil’s strength.
Public health is encouraging organizations to be alert, stock naloxone kits, train staff, and share information with clients.
For those using alone, the National Overdose Response Service is available at 1-888-688-6677.
