A major infrastructure overhaul along Fairview Avenue is set to begin Monday, June 16th in St. Thomas, with road closures and detours in place through late fall.
The Fairview Avenue Rehabilitation and Bridge Removal Project, stretching from Talbot Street to Warehouse Street, will see the removal of the old bridge over the CASO rail line, along with significant upgrades to underground infrastructure, roadway surfaces, and pedestrian safety features.
To accommodate the work, Fairview Avenue and Burwell Road will be closed, with detours directing traffic around the construction zone. Talbot Street and local business access will remain open, though lane restrictions will be in effect.
The project is part of the city’s “Complete Streets” initiative, which aims to improve accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists of all ages and abilities.
Phase 1 includes:
- Bridge removal and installation of a new pedestrian tunnel
- Upgrades to water, storm, and sanitary sewer systems
- New curbs, sidewalks, and traffic signalization
Phase 1 is expected to wrap up by November 2025. Phase 2, extending the improvements from Warehouse Street to Elm Street, has been placed on hold due to provincial legislation (Bill 212 – Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, 2024).
The City is encouraging residents to plan ahead for travel impacts and to explore alternate routes while the work is completed.
Maps and detour information are available through the City of St. Thomas website.
