As extreme heat continues to blanket the region, the City of St. Thomas has temporarily closed all sports fields until the current heat warning is lifted.
In a notice on Monday, the city confirmed that the closures are in effect immediately and will remain in place until at least Tuesday, June 25th.
Fields are expected to reopen on Wednesday, weather permitting.
The decision impacts several local leagues, including the St. Thomas Soccer Club, St. Thomas Minor Baseball, and both Men’s and Women’s Slo-Pitch.
The city is urging residents to take precautions during the heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and seeking out cooler indoor spaces when possible.
Cooling centres are open across St. Thomas, and splash pad hours have been extended to 9 a.m.– 9 p.m. throughout the heat wave.
