In his first year of eligibility, Joe Thornton is one of eight individuals elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame today (Tuesday).
The St. Thomas native racked up 430 goals and 1,109 assists in 1,714 games with four teams, including the San Jose Sharks and the Leafs.
Thornton was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins and finished out his NHL career with the Florida Panthers.
He won the Hart Trophy as the League’s most valuable player and the Art Ross Trophy as its leading scorer with 125 points (29 goals, 96 assists) in the 2005-06 season.
Thornton won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with Team Canada.
The class of 2025 is scheduled to be inducted Nov. 10 in Toronto.
