A close call for the residents of a home on Vienna Line in Bayham.
Just before 5 a.m. Thursday, Bayham firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the attic at 54701 Vienna Line.
While there were no flames, smoke was clearly visible.
The fire was contained to a relatively small area in the kitchen ceiling. However, there was evidence the fire had been ongoing for several hours due to the charred attic trusses.
There were no injuries and the family was alerted by a smoke alarm.
Bayham Fire Chief Harry Baranik noted when the family first heard the smoke alarm they thought it was faulty.
Baranik explained in a media release, “Most smoke alarms will normally have an intermittent beep when there is a fault in the alarm or the battery is getting low. However, when a smoke alarm is constantly sounding – it has been activated for a reason. Everybody needs to take this alarm seriously, get out and call the fire department immediately.”
Two stations and 19 firefighters responded. Damage is estimated at $20,000 and the fire is deemed to be the result of an electrical issue.
