Despite major foundation repairs currently underway at 24 John Street, operations at the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank—and the Royal Canadian Legion —remain uninterrupted.
Crews from North Shore Excavating have been working quickly and efficiently on the 1942 building’s foundation, which has suffered from ongoing flooding issues, particularly in the basement-level Legion area.
The restoration is part of a broader effort to preserve the aging structure and prepare for future improvements, such as the addition of a new loading dock, shared Karen McDade, Manager of Public Relations and Administration at the food bank.
Currently, all visitors—including food bank clients and Legion members—are being directed to use the back (west-side) entrance, as other access points are temporarily fenced off for safety.
McDades notes that updates will be provided once work moves to the final portion.
Visitors are encouraged to check the food bank’s social media pages for the latest updates and entrance instructions.
Those needing parking can find nearby options on John Street, Talbot Street, or in the lot by Westlake Evans Park, with a short paved path leading to the food bank.
“We know it’s inconvenient,” McDade added, “but we’re grateful for everyone’s patience. This is a good thing—it’s going to make our building stronger and serve the community even better.”
