A group of 28 Special Olympic athletes from St. Thomas is in Brantford this weekend, competing at the 2025 Special Olympics Ontario Summer Games.
In total, more than 1,100 athletes are expected to participate in the games.
They will be competing in athletics, bocce, golf, soccer and softball, with all of the athletes having to qualify for the games.
myFM spoke with Dave Roberts, a member of the St. Thomas softball team and asked him how he feels the team will do this year.
Roberts, a right fielder with the team, pointed out the key strong areas on the squad.
All of the players are from St. Thomas but are representing southwestern Ontario at the competition.
Coach David Kerr stressed it is quite the experience for all the coaches and players, some of whom have never competed at this level.
He added, “They will have a great time.”
Meantime Roberts says it all comes down to playing their best.
But it is also about having fun.
Many of the athletes will have the chance to be part of Team Ontario and compete at the national Special Olympic Games next year in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
