Roughly five years after a small group of fastball-loving dads decided to rebuild the sport in Fingal, their efforts have paid off in a big way.
The Fingal Storm U20 Fastball Team is headed to the Canadian National Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, after a strong performance at the provincial eliminations earlier this month.
The team will represent Ontario alongside three others in the seven-team national tournament, which begins July 30th. Co-coach Charles Annett, who helped launch the team in 2020, says the journey hasn’t been easy—but it’s been worth it.
Through pandemic challenges, limited resources, and rebuilding from the grassroots level, Annett says their U20 team has become a standout—and not just for their on-field performance.
Remarkably, both coaches are non-parent volunteers, committed purely out of passion for the game, shared Annett. “My daughters never played, and my co-coach’s son stopped playing years ago. We do this because we love it—and because we believe in these kids.”
The U20 boys currently play in the South Middlesex Men’s Fastball League, competing against seasoned players from St. Thomas, Delaware, Chippewa, Dutton and more. Annett shares how the player’s dedication this year specifically has made all the difference.
The road to Nationals became a reality after a strong showing at the elimination tournament in Chepstow, near Kincardine. They’ll now face teams from across the country, including Quebec, Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, and familiar Ontario rivals Plattsville, St. George, and Chatsworth.
The national tournament features a round-robin format, with teams playing two games daily from July 30th to August 1st, followed by playoffs. Fans can follow updates on the Fingal Storm Facebook page, and Softball Canada’s website, which may include livestreamed games.
Annett explains that the road to Saskatoon comes with financial pressure, and the team is currently fundraising to support the trip.
It’s taking place July 25th and includes dinner, cart, and 12 holes of golf for $110 per player.
“We’ve had amazing support so far—from employers giving time off, to our league cheering us on,” Annett said. “Now we just want to represent Fingal, Elgin, and Ontario the best we can.”
