Relief is on the way for drivers frustrated by the rough rail crossing on First Avenue in St. Thomas.
The City has confirmed that long-awaited repairs will begin Wednesday, July 23 at 7 a.m., with lane closures in effect during the day and full reopening expected by day’s end.
Traffic will be maintained in both directions while work is underway.
The announcement follows a wave of public concern and a direct statement from Mayor Joe Preston last week, where he called out miscommunication from CN Rail and assured residents the City was doing everything possible to get the crossing fixed.
At the time, Preston stressed that while the City had awarded a paving contract in 2023, CN’s lack of flagging support had stalled progress. His comments appear to have prompted renewed dialogue and action from the railway company.
In a social media post Tuesday, the city thanked residents for their patience and praised CN for stepping up.
