Elgin County Pride Week officially kicks off Friday, July 25th, with organizers from the Rainbow Optimist Club of Southwestern Ontario inviting residents to take part in a lineup of events designed to celebrate inclusivity, raise awareness, and foster local connections.
The celebration begins with a Drag Show at Passers Lounge in St. Thomas on Friday beginning at 8 p.m., hosted by local queen Mrs.Chastity Cage. This will be followed by Pride in the Park, happening Saturday, July 26th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pinafore Park.
With more than 42 vendors and community service organizations, entertainment all day—including live music, drag performances, karaoke with the queens, and a youth zone—Rainbow Optimist Club member, Neil Hubert says the event offers something for everyone.
The day will also include a parade around Pinafore Park explains member, Devon Church, taking place around 2:30 p.m.
Hubert credits sponsors-including Scotiabank, Family & Children’s Services, and Canada PRIDE-for helping make the day’s events possible.
The week continues with a flag-raising ceremony at the Elgin County Administration Building on Monday, July 28th. While organizers say they’re grateful for the County’s continued support, they expressed disappointment that not all local leaders responded to calls for public endorsement.
Adding “It can’t always fall to the community to request that support,” said Church. “We want to see municipalities and elected officials take the initiative and be visible allies.”
Elgin County Pride Week celebrations continue Thursday, August 1st with a YMCA Pride Swim in St. Thomas. It’s free to attend, but non-members must sign a waiver.
The week wraps up with Aylmer Pride on Monday, August 4th at the Optimist Pavilion by the pool. Running 1 to 4 p.m., the event features a DJ, vendors, and a laid-back, picnic-style atmosphere.
