Elgin County OPP confirmed Tuesday just before 10 a.m. that Currie Road in Dutton-Dunwich is now open to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic following last week’s devastating fire at Cotrac Ford Lincoln.
The blaze broke out just before 10 p.m. Wednesday (July 30), destroying the long-standing dealership located in the heart of downtown.
When firefighters arrived, the showroom was already fully engulfed in flames.
Crews from Central Elgin, Southwold, and West Elgin fire departments responded to the scene, with Central Elgin’s aerial truck and tanker from Port Stanley arriving around 11 p.m.
Due to the intensity of the fire and heavy smoke, residents of a nearby apartment building were evacuated as a precaution. Dutton-Dunwich interim CAO Don MacLeod said they were safely returned to their units by 5 a.m. Thursday.
The Office of the Fire Marshal continues to lead the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
